Open die forging

Open-die forging of forgings belongs to the massive forming group and is mainly used for project-based parts with a single part drawing. In simple terms, an open die forging is “tailor made” for the application. Open-die forging of forgings is not economical for mass production. Drop forging is the preferred process.

Open-die forging significantly improves the mechanical properties of the steel, such as yield strength. The weight range of parts produced by open die forging is from 100 kg to 350 tonnes.

Our network of suppliers can produce coil weights up to 4500 kg and coil heights up to 860 mm with a maximum diameter of 4500 mm.

Duplex and Superduplex Steels

Forgings in duplex and super duplex or 2-phase steels (ferrite & austenite) are preferred in the chemical, petrochemical, seawater desalination and offshore industries due to their chemical properties.

Open die forging requires a high degree of experience in the handling of duplex and super duplex. Duplex and super duplex react with cracks in the component if forging is too fast and the required forging temperature is not maintained.

For project business and components that cannot be manufactured from the available standard stock material, we work with our partners to supply components from available ingot material in Duplex & Super Duplex steel grades such as F55 (1.4501), F53 (1.4410) and F51 (1.4462).

Tool steel

We also specialise in open-die forgings in tool steel (including extrusions). In particular, we offer open-die forgings in grades 1.2316 and 1.2312, 1.2738, 1.2714.

We produce bushings, shafts, rings and other geometries for components that require the properties of the particular tool steel grade.

We can support you in a range of dimensions and properties that cannot be provided by standard bar stock.
